".... just calling someone "contact" instead of "friend" doesn't mean I don't like that person. It just means I don’t know him/her well enough to consider him/her a "friend." Because to me, this word has a meaning. Shying away from labeling you "friend" isn’t impolite, it’s honest. Because we are not friends."
I agree.
On the other hand, I am everybody's friend, ala Tom from MySpace =) Ha ha. Seriously, I do befriend 99.99% of requests. I don't put much weight into these social-networking sites. Even on the most "legitimate" site (IMHO), Linkedin, I've over 400+ contacts, almost as many as the hungry recruiters prowling for their next catch. I probably have met half.
Do I care about what any future employers may think if they search my name? Yes, of course. That's why I leave out my drug addictions and sexual fetishes from 'favorite activities.'
Social-networking websites are fun, addictive and being the geek that I am, it's a way to interact w/ fellow human beings. Lame, eh? Hee hee, see ya on Facebook, you frackin' hypocrite =PLabels: linkedin, socialpsychology
