I always reply, "Code Monkey or Software Engineer." You get the jist of the work I perform =)
Humans need to believe in oneself or in a cause. A lot of folks nowadays motivate themselves via their career. It's awesome to give the individual a sense of purpose; life is too short to wade in unemployment, especially in capitalistic America.
Corporate beings love their titles, "Super Senior Manager of ${insert_department_here}" or the number of direct reports (one's minions) beneath 'em. I worked at a company in Los Angeles which employed 150 peeps, 35 of which held a title of Vice President. Excessive, perhaps? Uhhh, yeah. It's LA, so one cannot expect any less; they love their status and power. That's their way of 'being awesome'.
No doubt that people need their superfluous titles and the feeling of inclusiveness, but it bugs how much abuse, ignorance and arrogance follows those who believe this is most important within their jobs.
