So, from what I've gathered from the in-depth piece above is that Microsoft wants Yahoo! for patent-related reasons, namely '361 patent, intellectual property from the Overture acquisition. Otherwise, like I've said before, an acquisition or merger makes zero sense.
Basically, M$ wants to own the patent to 1) avoid paying royalties to Y! for its paid search product—M$ Ad Center—and 2) frack w/ Google who, years ago, had "settled" w/ Yahoo! on licensing such patent—probably paying a negligible amount.
No wonder Google has great interest in a free, independent Y! and why M$ wants to Y!'s search "assets".

- With Ask.com cutting jobs and realigning its strategy, it seems the "little search engine that could" has thrown in the towel, transforming and re-branding itself into a women's site (ivillage.com?), chock full of Rachel Ray and Tyra Banks =P Very similar to the female-targeted shows on daytime television ....
Hmm, it seems as if Yahoo! has already beat y'all there w/ Food, OMG, Health, etc. I reckon becoming a media company will be challenging for the Ask.com team. Good luck, fellas.
The Ask.com transformation also confirms that the search engine battle is over. Google and Yahoo! are the only real winners, brands accepted and embraced by consumers as trustworthy and reliable. And that is also why Microsoft wants Yahoo! sooooo bad; they can't gain ground via traditional means and the only way in is to pay, and pay big.
The only way to beat Google and search is to invent a better means to find, traverse the wrangled and unstructured interwebs. Right now, there's no better way, because of its simplicity—think 'enter a keyword'.

- I reckon it's m' turn to chime in on the fun. I'm never short of an opinion.
First, it'll never work. Two big slow-as-molasses corporate deities merging overlapping services is similar to releasing two rams running full-on at one another: bloody, bloody massacre. AOL & Time Warner, HP & Compaq, etc. I don't think Y! or Microsoft has successfully integrated any of their acquisitions, albeit Flickr has grown incredibly—probably because of Stewart and how he manages his team and dealing w/ his superiors, upper management, (aka the buzzword bullies). Every other buy has had incredible difficulties.
The Big G men have bounced back, hoping to prevent the takeover. I believe that they are afraid that Microsoft will destroy everything good in Y!. How many big interweb companies have the clout, power and money to shape the wild, wild web for societal good, unshackled by the grips (somewhat) of other corporate monsters? No one wants Yahoo! to lose—and they will in this merger—and that's why the Big G doesn't want it to happen.
I doubt that M$ Empire is serious about search and evolving the internet. I reckon it's more personal to King Ballmer and his minions to undermine the Google Kingdom and bring "peace" to the lands. In the end, the bottom line could kill. In a really bad way.
I wish Yahoo! had the power to buy itself back. Take it private and help build the next big thing or something and never be reminded every three months about meeting numbers and all-hands of all buzzwords—now that's moving the needle and taking it to the next level =)
Conclusion: the merger is an attempt to redefine clusterfuck.

Worth a look. Can these Googlers generate enough momentum for Linux on the desktop? I hope so.
The only caviet: why the proprietary G software? Looks like a Windoze desktop manager. Don't be evil fellas? =)

I always thought Yahoo! would be the social backbone to the internet w/ its deep, global presence. Hmm, not so much. And last year, with the release of the Y! BBAuth API, I thought there'd be a bigger push for Y! as a platform for other small runners (start-ups) to piggy-back on. Of course, there'd be enough give-and-take of data for both parties to smile about. Yes, vague thoughts there, cause I really don't have precise details.

- The Big G has launched a QnA Site in China: http://wenda.tianya.cn/wenda. I reckon they are trying to gain market share in emerging markets, since the stateside Google Answers closed its doors last year. Note that Y! Answers and G! Answers were completely different products.
What's interesting is the splash of green which has been staple to the slew of QnA sites released post Y! Answers. That internal green, the "alien-blood green", is the official accent color to QnA sites now.

I had the pleasure to watch Sicko. It's sad that our country operates in such a crude way: maximizing profits. That's just how capitalism works. You want a chance to catapult yourself above your peers and live in luxury? Then shut the hell up! Heh heh, which leads me to .....
I took offense to the big G's Health-related blog post:"We can place text ads, video ads, and rich media ads in paid search results or in relevant websites within our ever-expanding content network. Whatever the problem, Google can act as a platform for educating the public and promoting your message."
So the Google advertising platform can work the same way as the Swift Boat Veteran attack ads during the '04 Presidential elections? Ooooh, and I can't wait for those warm and fuzzy text ads from Philip Morris.
