I came across this piece on data mining, globalization, economics, health, etc. Visualizing data is what attracts me to programming / software development. Demonstrating while educating your audience is very difficult in an era of Powerpoint presentations, attention span deficiencies, sound bites and politically-skewed stats. How do you sell your points articulately with the right data, quelling doubts while not putting your minions to sleep?
Ideas Worth Spreading: Hans Rosling from TED 2006

Visual imagery can tell stories and truths which would be very hard to capture and communicate ... all otherwise.
Hans Rosling, Professor of International Health, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden since 1998, uses beautiful animated charts and minimalistic diagrams to explain the world we live in. Poverty, money and health can be seen at once shaping or being shaped by world events, technology and the passing of time.
Here are other good videos on data visualization / information design.
