Entry: I just halfheartedly watched MTV's annual movie awards. Man, MTV is the ultimate advertising platform. Hot damn, they own the fun, hip and cool similarly to how Apple has marketed its iPod and Target has extended its partnership w/ its suppliers through its bullseye. Take heed Microsoft, your Zune marketing lacks this appeal and that is part of why its music player is ultimately FAIL!

I used to rag on MTV and how it has productized music, transforming half-beat musicians into mega-rock, sexy entertainers, packaged w/ a bow and spam marketed to the masses. Like replacing sugar w/ a high fructose corn syrup. Sorta. I loved pointing m' judgmental finger at profit margins and corrupting America's youth.

Now, I'm sorta appreciating how much fun the program really is. Celebrities, happy-go-luck pop music and musical performances, all bundled into a 2-hour long fiesta of fun and laughs. Those happy beats had me boppin' m' head. Maybe it's time I put away the angry punk and melancholy tunes and listen to some happy beats =)

I'm late to the game as the rest of Web 2.0-ish nation has embraced muxtape.com. Its best feature is its lack of featuritis, offering a simple (you can do about 3-5 things) and clean user experience.

Lifestreaming and better songs

Entry: I've refactored some code and wrote some new to create a Friendfeed - Shadowbox.js - Google Charts mashup. It looks very similar to m' individual friendfeed page, but I think the Shadowbox multimedia library has a far better experience. Seriously, kudos to Mike Jackson who wrote a very impressive piece of foo, abstracted properly to plug into various JavaScript frameworks (YUI, jQuery, MooTools, etc.)

Also, I've augmented the Good Songs list w/ the Yahoo! Media Player, so you can listen to a plethora of m' favorite songs. You can even right click and save the MP3s =)

In Rainbows

Entry: Today, Santa USPS dropped off a post-Christmas present, the uber album, In Rainbows from Radiohead. Fantastic set, colorful inserts, dos CDs, etc. Totally worth the $80+ US dollars! NOT!

Still, I agree w/ the idea of packaging physical discs w/ bows and ribbons to encourage consumers to purchase physical merchandise rather than just download or bittorrent the MP3s. Actually, I did download the album months ago and paid nothing (they told me I could do that). Then I broke out m' plastic and bought the gift set.

I hope the media companies catch on and do the same, albeit the $80+ price tag is waaaay too much. I'm sure they can cobble together a Britney's favorite line of panties (though I hear she doesn't wear any) and new album, luring teeny boppers at an acceptable price of, let's say, $12.99?

Could work. It's better than suing their customers for copyright infringement.
